Kombucha is getting a lot of mainstream hype these days, and its something I am excited about as I couldn't find Kombucha in Australia after I got back from the States a few years back. The very first kombucha that I had ever tried was a homemade one from a family friend in L.A, and ever since then I never looked back. I was obsessed with this drink. Because of my living conditions, it was a little difficult to make Kombucha at home in L.A so I bought my kombucha from Sprouts or Wholefoods and stocked it up in the fridge. However, now as Australia is getting onto the 'kombucha bandwagon' let me explain how good this drink really is and why you should try it.
What is Kombucha?
“The scoby is what breaks down the sugars and converts it into alcohol, carbon dioxide, and acids, creating a vinegary and acidity taste.”
Kombucha which is also known as ' tea mushroom', is a fermented drink made with either green or black tea, sugar, and a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast, which has been shorted as an acronym to "SCOBY". The scoby is what makes the drink magical, as it aids the fermentation process. The scoby is what breaks down the sugars and converts it into alcohol, carbon dioxide, and acids, creating a vinegary and acidity taste.
This drink has been around for more than 2,200 years which was said to be originated from northeastern China and has made its way all around the world.
It has been said that kombucha has amazing health benefits which are- good health gut (as contains probiotics) - manages blood pressure- promotes a healthy immune system - enhances weight loss - reduces cholesterol levels - contains antioxidants- can kill harmful bacteria However, there isn't enough scientific evidence to back these health claims. Personally, I know people that drink kombucha mainly for gut health benefits and also for digestion after a meal. This is something I do as well, where I would like to drink a glass of kombucha to digest better after a big meal.
